Rodeo is a sport that came about from the practices used in cattle herding across United States, South America, New Zealand, and Australia. The sport involves the skills generally used by a cowboy with livestock and horses. Professional rodeo consists of different competitive events such as steer wrestling, calf roping, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding, and saddle bronc.
Steer Wrestling
In this rodeo event, a rider on a horse has to chase a steer, then drop from the horse onto the steer, and wrestle it to the ground by manipulating the steer's horns. This requires specialized technique and there is high risk of injury. Presently, the steers used for this competition are longhorns or Corriente cattle that weigh around 450 to 650 pounds.
